Insulation work generally falls into three areas of the home: the attic, exterior walls, and crawlspaces or unfinished basements. Each area behaves differently — heat rises, so attic insulation deals primarily with heat loss through the roof, while wall and crawlspace insulation deal more with air infiltration and moisture. Insulation quality is usually measured in R-value, which describes a material's resistance to heat flow — higher R-value means better insulating performance per inch of material. The right R-value and insulation type for a given area depends on where in the home you're insulating and what's already there, which is part of what we look at when scoping your project.

Attic Insulation

Attics are one of the most common places for insulation upgrades because they are usually the easiest area of a home to access and because uninsulated or under-insulated attics are a major source of heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. Attic insulation is typically installed as blown-in loose-fill (fiberglass or cellulose) or as batts laid between and over the ceiling joists. Blown-in insulation is often preferred for attics with irregular framing or existing insulation that's been compressed or disturbed over the years, since it fills gaps and odd spaces more completely than batts.

Before adding new attic insulation, it's worth checking for air leaks around recessed lighting, plumbing stacks, chimney chases, and the attic hatch itself — insulation reduces heat transfer through the material, but it does not stop air leaking around and through gaps. Sealing those gaps first, then adding insulation on top, gets more out of the investment than insulation alone.

Wall Insulation

Wall insulation is more involved than attic work because the wall cavity is enclosed behind drywall or plaster. For homes undergoing a remodel where walls are already open — a kitchen or bathroom remodel, a basement finish, or a home addition — it's an efficient time to add or upgrade wall insulation, since the cavity is already exposed and no additional demolition is required. For existing finished walls, insulation can sometimes be added by blowing loose-fill insulation into the cavity through small access holes, without removing the drywall, though this depends on what's already inside the wall.

Older Indianapolis-area homes built before modern energy codes often have uninsulated or minimally insulated exterior walls, which is one of the more common findings during a remodel that opens up wall cavities for other reasons.

Crawlspace & Basement Insulation

Crawlspaces and unfinished basements bring moisture into the insulation conversation in a way that attics and walls generally don't. Because these spaces sit against or partially below grade, insulation choices need to account for ground moisture — which is why rigid foam board is commonly used against foundation walls in these areas rather than standard fiberglass batts, which absorb moisture and are prone to mold growth if they get wet.
